Gen. Michael Flynn's immunity request gets no takers — yet - USA TODAY
Michael Flynn's attorney says the former national security adviser is in discussions with the House and Senate intelligence committees on receiving immunity from "unfair prosecution" in exchange for questioning in the Russia investigation.
WASHINGTON — While President Trump encouraged former top aide Michael Flynn to offer testimony to investigators in exchange for immunity from possible prosecution, congressional leaders investigating Russia's interference in the 2016 election signaled Friday that it was too early to consider such an agreement.
"We should first acknowledge what a grave and momentous step it is for a former national security adviser to the president of the United States to ask for immunity from prosecution,'' said California Rep. Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee. "When the time comes to consider requests for immunity from any witness, we will of course require a detailed proffer of any intended testimony.''

Schiff's statement marked the first public remarks by from any of the leaders of the House and Senate Intelligence committees regarding Flynn's immunity request initially conveyed late Thursday by attorney Robert Kelner.
"Gen. Flynn certainly has a story to tell, and he very much wants to tell it, should the circumstances permit,'' Kelner said, before stating Flynn's desire for immunity.

"No reasonable person, who has the benefit of advice from counsel, would submit to questioning in such a highly politicized, witch-hunt environment without assurances against unfair prosecution,'' Kelner said.

Prosecutors called no victims of illegal detention to the witness stand, although they successfully blocked a defense motion that would have prevented them from doing so.

And the star of the show, Arpaio, never testified in his own defense.
Arpaio was present each of the four days in court though, attentive to each of the witnesses. The former sheriff seemed in high spirits throughout the proceedings, often chatting and joking with reporters in the hallways.

The order stated that deputies could not detain any individuals solely because they were suspected of being in the country without authorization and were not accused of a crime.

Deputies continued to detain these individuals, turning them over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement or the Border Patrol, until the order became permanent in May 2013.
Prosecutors from the U.S. Justice Department’s Public Integrity Section said the practice led to at least 171 victims illegally detained.

Prosecution’s response

Trial attorney John Keller attempted to undermine former lieutenant Joe Sousa’s argument that his former employer never instructed him to violate a judge's order. Keller highlighted inter-office emails to and from Sousa just after the order was issued.

The emails indicate that Sousa and Sgt. Brett Palmer spoke to former Arpaio attorney Tim Casey several times about how the injunction would affect operations.
